PAN-ASIA ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:  GRADE 5

Oral Presentation and Discussion

Standard One: Students will follow agreed-upon rules for formal and informal discussions.  They will pose questions, listen to the ideas of others and contribute their own information or ideas in group discussions or interviews in order to acquire new knowledge. They will make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose and the information to be conveyed.

1. Benchmarks:
1.1. Use agreed-upon rules for informal and formal discussions in small and large groups such as Book Club, Literature Circles and Buddy Reading.
1.2. Facilitate discussion groups independent from the teacher.
1.3. Students will conduct interviews for research projects and writing.
1.4. Give oral presentations, using teacher-made criteria that demonstrate consideration of audience, purpose and content.
1.5. Use visual aides in to support presentations.

Language

Standard Two: Students will understand and acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing.  They will analyze standard English grammar and usage and recognize how its vocabulary has developed and been influenced by other languages. Students will describe, analyze, and appropriately use formal and informal English.

2. Benchmarks:
2.1. Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words through context clues, definition and structural analysis, using knowledge of Greek and Latin roots, suffixes and prefixes.
2.2. Determine pronunciations, meanings, alternate word choices and parts of speech of words using dictionaries, and thesauruses.
2.3. Identify and use correctly all eight parts of speech, verb phrases and verb tenses.
2.4. Identify a word that performs different functions according to its position in the sentence.
2.5. Demonstrate in writing, reading and oral language knowledge of the appropriate use of formal and informal language.

Reading and Literature

Standard Three: Students will understand the nature of written English and the relationship of letters and spelling patterns to the sounds of speech.  They will identify the basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation.  They will deepen their understanding of a literary or non-literary work by relating its contemporary context or historical background.

3. Benchmarks:
3.1. Expand vocabulary through word study and independent reading.
3.2. Identify basic facts in and main ideas and supporting ideas and details in a text and use them as a basis for interpretation.
3.3. Identify and analyze sensory language in literary text and recognize organizational structures and text features in informational text.
3.4. Relate a literary work to its setting, Identify and analyze characteristics of various genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, short story and drama) as forms with distinct characteristic and purposes.
3.5. Apply knowledge of the concept of theme in literature and provide evidence from the text to provide evidence of understanding.
3.6. Demonstrate how different authors use the same theme in their writing.
3.7. Identify and analyze story elements of plot character, theme and setting in a piece of writing with support from the text.
3.8. Identify, analyze and apply knowledge of informational text to get information.
3.9. Use literature and informational text to write a Key Question response supported with evidence from the text.
3.10. Perform dramatic readings recitations and performances that demonstrate consideration of audience and purpose.

Writing and Composition

Standard Four: Students will write with a clear focus, coherent organization and sufficient detail.  They will write for different audiences and purposes and use their knowledge of standard English conventions in writing, revising and editing.  They will demonstrate improvement in organization, content and word choice in their compositions after revising them.

4. Benchmarks:
4.1. Take a seed idea from their Writers’ Notebook and bring it through the writing process of draft, multiple revisions and edits to a published product, independently, in a variety of genre.
4.2. Write with a clear focus, coherent organization and sufficient detail demonstrating voice and knowledge of writer’s craft.
4.3. Write stories or scripts containing basic story elements.
4.4. Write poems demonstrating poetic technique.
4.5. Write research papers with a clear focus, topic sentence, supporting details and conclusion.
4.6. Write formal and friendly letters for authentic purposes.
4.7. Make distinctions among fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry when writing for different purposes.
4.8. Organize ideas in writing in a way that makes sense and revise to improve level of detail and precision.
4.9. Use knowledge of mechanics and grammar to edit writing.
4.10. Keep a writing portfolio to assess and evaluate work.
4.11. Obtain and organize material from a variety of sources for research. 

 

Media and Technology

Standard Five: Students will design and create coherent media productions (audio, video, television, multimedia) with a clear controlling idea, adequate detail and appropriate consideration of audience, purpose and medium.

5. Benchmarks:
5.1. Create presentations using computer technology, posters, reports, and graphic design
5.2. Develop and apply criteria for assessing the effectiveness of presentations
5.3. Gather information using the Internet and information databases
5.4. Use their understanding of television to distinguish between fact and fiction
5.5. Examine and explain advertising
5.6. View, understand and discuss informational media productions
5.7. Compare stories in print with their filmed adaptations, describing the similarities and differences in the portrayal of characters, plot, and settings
5.8. View, understand, and discuss informational media productions.
5.9. Use film, radio, TV and the Internet to demonstrate an understanding of how these mediums convey information and entertain in ways that are different from text.
5.10. Create a media production using effective images from text, music, software or graphics.

Standard Five: Students will identify, analyze and apply knowledge of the conventions, elements and techniques of film, radio, video, television and multimedia productions to support their understanding.  They will design and create media productions with a clear with a clear controlling idea, adequate detail and appropriate consideration of audience, purpose and medium.

Benchmarks:

  • 5.1 Use film, radio, TV and the Internet to demonstrate an understanding of how these mediums convey information and entertain in ways that are different from text.
  • 5.2 Create a media production using effective images from text, music, software or graphics.
